Beach Wheelchair Program
Who is eligible to borrow a beach wheelchair?
Beach wheelchairs are available to residents of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and visitors staying within town limits.
How can I request a beach wheelchair?
To request a beach wheelchair, you must provide proof of residency or proof that you are staying at a hotel/motel/vacation home within the town limits. You can do this by:
- Calling or bringing your driver's license or ID to Town Hall
- Confirming a pick-up and drop-off location within Lauderdale-By-The-Sea town limits
Once your residency or stay is verified, a wheelchair will be delivered to you.
How long can I borrow a beach wheelchair for?
You can reserve the beach wheelchair for up to three days of use.
Is there a cost to borrow a beach wheelchair?
No, the Town provides beach wheelchairs free of charge to eligible residents and visitors.
How many beach wheelchairs are available?
The Town currently has two beach-accessible wheelchairs available for borrowing.
Where can I pick up or have the wheelchair delivered?
Once approved, the Town will coordinate delivery and pickup within Lauderdale-By-The-Sea town limits.
Beach Accessibility Features
Does the Town provide beach access mats?
Yes! The Town has two mobi-mats that provide easier access to the beach:
- El Prado Park Beach Portal
- 1700 North Ocean Drive
Are there plans to expand accessibility options?
The Town is committed to improving accessibility and will consider enhancements when funding is available and/or when applying for accessibility grants.
New Crosswalks
What improvements have been made to pedestrian crosswalks?
The Town collaborated with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to install new crosswalk enhancements along A1A, improving pedestrian safety. These upgrades provide safer crossings for everyone, including individuals with mobility challenges.
