Sea Shorts Play Festival returns to Lauderdale-By-The-Sea in October

The Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Community Theater's Seaside Players return to Jarvis Hall over two weekends in October with their semi-annual Sea Shorts Play Festival.

Showtimes are 7PM on Friday, Oct. 18; 7PM on Saturday, Oct. 19, and 4PM on Sunday, Oct. 20. The shows are free. No reservations needed. Seating is limited. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each performance.

The plays are held in Jarvis Hall, 4505 N. Ocean Drive, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, a half-mile north of Commercial Boulevard (adjacent to Town Hall). Parking at Jarvis Hall for all the shows is free.

The festival will present nine 10-minute comedies by a number of award-winning Florida playwrights: Love With The Proper Bagel, Drama Queen, Checkmate, Exceptional Service, There's New Life Coming, This Too, Shall Pass, Meet The Beatletoons, The Happy Place and The Beat Goes On.

The plays are directed by Lauderdale-By-The-Sea resident Brenda Aulbach.

"We have a great mix of comedies we think people will really enjoy," Aulbach said. "The cast has been working hard and we expect full houses for all six performances."

The plays deal with adult subject matter and aren't suitable for children under 18.

Here are descriptions of six of the nine plays:

Drama Queen: A New York City playwright has his hands full with a mean-spirited and egotistical actress who happens to be his ex-girlfriend.

The Happy Place: A widow who tried to spread her dead husband’s ashes at Disney World in Orlando is taken into custody by a security guard dressed as Woody from Toy Story.

Exceptional Service: A wife surprises her husband by taking him to a restaurant he’s never been to for their anniversary, but why does their polite but absent-minded waiter seem to know him?

Love With The Proper Bagel: A man who loves bagels more than anything else in the world is infatuated with the female cashier who works behind the counter at the bakery where he buys them.

Checkmate: In the game of chess, the King and Queen don’t always see eye to eye on who wears the pants in their family.

This, Too, Shall Pass: One poor guy’s elaborate plans to ask his girlfriend to marry him takes an unexpected turn.
