Commissioner Stuart Dodd was the youngest of five children brought up in Brighton, England. His father was the Town Clerk of Brighton in control of 6,000 employees. His brother rose to head of the family law firm. After graduating with an engineering degree at Manchester University in 1971, Commissioner Dodd started a career with the South Eastern Electricity Board. He spent seven years erecting overhead lines and under-grounding networks in small villages in rural Sussex, and then re-trained as a systems analyst. He became part of a team that developed computer systems for recording maintenance of plants and equipment still in use today.
His love was sailing. He and his first wife built a 44-foot steel sailboat and sailed from England to New Zealand. Not content to go only half way around the world, Vice Mayor Dodd joined a 77-foot sailboat as captain to complete the voyage from there to Holland. He was made an honorary member of the Sussex Yacht Club, where he had served as a director for many years.
After meeting his present wife, Penelope, in Fort Lauderdale in 1989, they circumnavigated the Caribbean and then sailed together to Australia. The pull of the land and the patter of tiny feet prompted them to return to their favorite place: The Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. This is now their permanent home. With 11 grandchildren a wonderful wife, Vice Mayor Dodd became involved in giving back to the community he loved. He became active in the CIC, rising to the position of president. He was proud to serve this grass roots organization as a forerunner to getting involved in Town politics. While the organization has changed he has steadfastly maintained his position on all election promises made in 2008 and has tried to approach every issue with research, compassion, knowledge and that sense of fairness and judgment that comes with experience and wisdom. Leaving the “P’ for personal out of the “P” for politics has been one of his goals. He is proud to serve this Town to the best of his ability and will do his best to represent your wishes.
